Recent data regarding suicide and drug overdose deaths, and gaps in receiving behavioral health services underscore the need for a coordinated system of crisis care that is integrated within the larger behavioral health system of care. Children and adults who do not receive needed behavioral health crisis services are at risk for experiencing unnecessary and/or multiple hospital readmissions, incarceration, homelessness, overdose, early death, and suicide. Families and youth may become unnecessarily involved in the child welfare system and/or juvenile justice system, which separates youth from their family and caregiver supports.
