Behavioral health integration (BHI) is the amalgamation of physical health, mental health, and substance use disorder (SUD) care into a coherent, effective, and efficient structure that provides whole-person healthcare. Access to specialized mental health care for individuals with complex medical issues and co-occurring psychiatric concerns, particularly those with limited financial resources, is scarce.1 With respect to the workforce, 37% of the U.S. population lives in areas characterized by the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) as mental health professional shortage areas (HPSA), and this scarcity directly impacts behavioral health (BH) service access.
