The landscape for behavioral health crises in the United States is transforming significantly. Although some states, territories, Tribes, and communities have well-developed crisis systems, in other locations, crisis care is limited, fragmented, or even nonexistent. The recent implementation of the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline has led to the expansion of crisis services and represents the first of three main components of a comprehensive crisis system:
1. Someone to contact
2. Someone to respond
3. A safe place for help
