Naloxone and OORMs can reverse the life-threatening effects of opioid use, including those caused by prescription opioids (e.g., oxycodone and hydrocodone) and illicit opioids (e.g., heroin and illicit fentanyl) when these substances are taken in larger quantities than what a given individual’s body can tolerate. OORMs are available in nasal spray and injectable forms and work by reversing the effect of opioids in the body and restoring breathing during an opioid-related overdose.
