The lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer/questioning, and intersex (LGBTQI+) communities face significant behavioral health challenges that have not yet been fully addressed by systems of care. To assess the state of LGBTQI+ behavioral health and identify opportunities for change, in June 2024 the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services held a two-day LGBTQI+ Behavioral Health Summit (the Summit). This summit brought together a diverse group of subject matter experts and physical health and behavioral health professionals, including individuals with lived experience of mental health and substance use conditions, to review the mental health and substance use issues facing LGBTQI+ communities.
